Empowering the Participant Voice (EPV): Design and implementation of collaborative infrastructure to collect research participant experience feedback at scale

Empowering the Participant Voice (EPV) is an NCATS-funded six-CTSA collaboration to develop, demonstrate, and disseminate a low-cost infrastructure for collecting timely feedback from research participants, fostering trust, and providing data for improving clinical translational research. EPV leverages the validated Research Participant Perception Survey (RPPS) and the popular REDCap electronic data-capture platform. This report describes the development of infrastructure designed to overcome identified institutional barriers to routinely collecting participant feedback using RPPS and demonstration use cases. Sites engaged local stakeholders iteratively, incorporating feedback about anticipated value and potential concerns into project design. The team defined common standards and operations, developed software, and produced a detailed planning and implementation Guide. By May 2023, 2,575 participants diverse in age, race, ethnicity, and sex had responded to approximately 13,850 survey invitations (18.6%); 29% of responses included free-text comments. EPV infrastructure enabled sites to routinely access local and multi-site research participant experience data on an interactive analytics dashboard. The EPV learning collaborative continues to test initiatives to improve survey reach and optimize infrastructure and process. Broad uptake of EPV will expand the evidence base, enable hypothesis generation, and drive research-on-research locally and nationally to enhance the clinical research enterprise.

Care work straddles the divide between activities performed out of love and those performed for pay. The tensions created for workers by this divide raise questions concerning connections between recognition and redistribution. Through an analysis of mobilization among childcare workers, we argue that care workers can address redistribution and recognition simultaneously through vocabularies of both skill and virtue. We conclude with a discussion of strategies to overcome the false dichotomy between recognition and redistribution.

In her diary entry of 24 December 1862, Harriet Anne Severance, a domestic worker, detailed the activity surrounding the seasonal slaughter of hogs: “ It has been grease, grease all day, the hog is most taken care of. Henry,Meroa & I got started forMr. Henry’s this afternoon,Wells came after Henry overtook us at Uncle Chester’s, took him home with him, & Meroa and I went on had a good visit, & we have been to Mr. Child’s this evening.” While her day was unusually busy, it was not unusual in the way that it intertwined the lives of many people, men and women included.

Issues in assessing children's language learning
Introduction
The nature of children's foreign language learning might be expected to generate a range of assessment issues in need of attention. Factors such as the following might make the business of assessing young learners different from assessment practices in other FL situations:
Age: children's motor, linguistic, social and conceptual development must be taken into account in designing and implementing assessment.
Content of language learning: a focus on oral skills, vocabulary development and language use at discourse level.
Methods of teaching: interactive use of games, songs, rhymes, stories to carry language content and practice.
Aims: programmes for young learners often cite social and cross-cultural aims, as well as language learning aims.
Learning theories: e.g. zone of proximal development; learning through social interaction, able to do more with helpful other.
A survey of the sparse information that is available on young learner assessment (but see Rea-Dickins 2000) suggests that assessment practices, far from taking careful account of the above factors, may find themselves in conflict with them. In this first section, macro-level and then more micro-level conflicts are identified. Section 10.2 sets out principles for assessment that emerge from our learning-centred perspective. Key concepts in assessment are explained in section 10.3. In section 10.4, we consider techniques other than testing that teachers can use to assess children's language learning. Section 10.5 discusses self-assessment in the young learner classroom. Section 10.6 considers how the outcomes of assessment can be used to support learning through feedback to children.

This is a book about teaching that puts learning in the centre of the frame. Teaching and learning are not two sides of the same coin, but are essentially different activities, although they both take place in the public arena of the classroom. This book aims to help readers to make teaching more effective, by attending to learning and the inner mental world of the learner, and by then understanding how classroom activities and teacher decisions can create, or limit, children's opportunities for learning.
Teaching foreign languages to young children, which in this book will mean those between five and twelve years of age, has been happening for a long time; in many African and Asian countries, primary children have long been taught French or English as preparation for their use as a medium of instruction. In Europe and South America, the last ten years have seen an explosion of English classes, both in state systems and in private language schools. While the recent surge of interest has led to the publication of methodology books (e.g. Brewster et al. 1992; Dunn 1984; Halliwell 1992; Moon 2000; Phillips 1994; Scott and Ytreberg 1990), an accompanying debate about theoretical and research issues has been largely absent (but see Rixon 1999, some chapters of Kennedy and Jarvis 1991, and Brumfit, Moon and Tongue 1991). This book aims to provide teachers, and trainers of teachers, of foreign languages to young learners with a useful and workable theoretical framework and set of principles in which they can embed and develop their practice.

Taking a learning-centred perspective
What is different about teaching a foreign language to children, in contrast to teaching adults or adolescents? Some differences are immediately obvious: children are often more enthusiastic and lively as learners. They want to please the teacher rather than their peer group. They will have a go at an activity even when they don't quite understand why or how. However, they also lose interest more quickly and are less able to keep themselves motivated on tasks they find difficult. Children do not find it as easy to use language to talk about language; in other words, they do not have the same access as older learners to metalanguage that teachers can use to explain about grammar or discourse. Children often seem less embarrassed than adults at talking in a new language, and their lack of inhibition seems to help them get a more native-like accent. But these are generalisations which hide the detail of different children, and of the skills involved in teaching them. We need to unpack the generalisations to find out what lies underneath as characteristic of children as language learners. We will find that important differences do arise from the linguistic, psychological and social development of the learners, and that, as a result, we need to adjust the way we think about the language we teach and the classroom activities we use. Although conventional language teaching terms like ‘grammar’ and ‘listening’ are used in connection with the young learner classroom, understanding of what these mean to the children who are learning them may need to differ from how they are understood in mainstream language teaching.

Introduction
The previous chapter was concerned with children using the foreign language as discourse in the classroom and how such use might work to promote learning. This chapter deals with the development of vocabulary as a language resource.
Building up a useful vocabulary is central to the learning of a foreign language at primary level. While opinions differ as to how much grammar of the foreign language can be taught, children are clearly capable of learning foreign language words through participating in the discourse of classroom activities. Vocabulary has moved to centre stage in foreign language teaching in recent years, backed by substantial and increasing research (e.g. Carter and McCarthy 1988; Coady and Huckin 1997; Schmitt and Meara 1997; Singleton 1999; Read 2000). Alongside the growing importance of vocabulary, there are fascinating and, I suspect, very significant, changes taking place in how we think about the relative nature and roles of vocabulary and grammar. The more we find out about how words work in language and how vocabulary is learnt, stored and used, the more difficult it becomes to uphold the traditional split between vocabulary and grammar. Much important grammatical information is tied into words, and learning words can take students a long way into grammar. This suggests that if we give a high priority to vocabulary development, we are not thereby abandoning grammar. Rather, vocabulary learning can serve as a stepping stone to learning and using grammar. The interrelation of vocabulary and grammar in language learning will be taken further in the next chapter.

Stories and themes as holistic approaches to language teaching and learning
Stories and themes are placed together in this chapter and the next because they represent holistic approaches to language teaching and learning that place a high premium on children's involvement with rich, authentic uses of the foreign language. Stories offer a whole imaginary world, created by language, that children can enter and enjoy, learning language as they go. Themes begin from an overarching topic or idea that can branch out in many different directions, allowing children to pursue personal interests through the foreign language.
Exploring the use of stories and themes will allow us to re-visit the principles and approaches of earlier chapters, as we work through the possibilities and opportunities they offer. The approach in this book has been underpinned by the principle that children and their learning can guide teaching; in particular, I have tried to show how directions for teaching can emerge from the dynamic interplay between possible tasks, activities, and materials, on the one hand, and children's desire to find and construct coherence and meaning, on the other. When we have looked in previous chapters at aspects of the foreign language, task content and materials have been designed for the classroom. As we move now to stories and themes, we start from materials and content that have a more independent existence beyond the classroom.

Introduction
Language choice and language learning
This chapter considers issues around the uses of the foreign and first languages in the classroom. It looks at evidence from real classrooms and how we might interpret what has been found. In many situations, teachers are required to use only the foreign language in their language lessons, or they feel that they ought to. In practice, research and anecdotal evidence suggests that most teachers who share their pupils' mother tongue, use a mixture of the foreign language and the mother tongue. We will examine this evidence in some detail to look for patterns in the types of activities that each language is used for, and to see how teachers and pupils switch between languages in the course of activities. When we have a clearer picture of patterns of language choice, we can then develop the principle of ‘deliberate language choice’, in which choice is guided by the overarching goal of fostering the children's foreign language learning. This enables us to move away from the simple but impractical guideline ‘use only the target language’ to more subtle and helpful principles for language choice: ‘use as much of the target language as possible, and ensure that use of first language supports the children's language learning’.
The rest of the chapter will be devoted to exploring how those principles translate into action. Choosing to use more of the foreign language may mean that extra work is required to support children's understanding. If pupils are required to use the foreign language, then we know that this makes a greater demand on them than just understanding and that, again, appropriate support will be needed.
